Hello, I have gut renovated 60's ranch with a mostly underground finished basement (3-5 ft out of 8 ft underground) on Long Island near the water so humid. 2000 ft2 1st fl and 2000 ft2 basement. Each floor has it's own HVAC system. Contractor is proposing a Santa Fe Classic with a dedicated return pulling from the basement and the supply connected through a backdraft damper into the supply of the basement furnace. The stairway between floors is open. The basement system is going to be rarely, if ever, used. How does this setup look to you guys?
A portable old spec type 70 pint=, and when that died, a new spec type 50 pint portable dehumidifier was always able to keep the basement at 45-50% RH when the basement was only partially finished and the stairway was closed off so the Classic should be big enough. Also, the Classic should be able to overcome the backdraft damper if we turn on the AC fan to get more circulation in the basement, correct? Thanks!
