Houston , TX (May 30)
Make - Goodman Split
Model - CLJ48-1C
R22 with known slow leak assumed to be at evaporator coils?
Filters - all clean and replaced every 60 days.
Homeowner - Electronic Tech, Ametuer Mechanic, home repair.
Outside unit stopped running. Not frozen up, line side 240V good, contacts engaged by Thermostat, load side 240V good, motor hot but ohmed out good, compressor hot but ohmed out good, 60+5 capacitor read 57+2.5.
Cleaned coils and unit really good while it was cooling down. Next day replaced capacitor, kicked in and running. After 4 hours not cooling and suction line still dry to touch and not cold I turned unit off.
Excuse my assumptions but I feel low Freon caused compressor to turn itself off? Not sure why fan stopped running though?
What is my next step? I do have gauges and infrared temp gun used on auto ac jobs and am capable. Lots of good videos on how to check pressure. Both ports are schrader valve. I feel I can check it but before I try I wanted to ask advice on this forum? Anything I should check inside on evaporator first? Does taking pressure readings really help at this point?
My HVAC tech who has refilled Freon the last 2 summers tells me he cannot recharge it again as it is against the law. Is this true?
If so I am strapped for cash so what is best options? A fully new system is $****. If I buy a new A coil can a professional swap it out and refill with R22?
Please refrain from adding pricing to your posts, as it is against the forum rules.
