I had an old HVAC and had disconnected the thermostat a number of times without issue. I had a new Trane S9X1 installed and the installer told me to never disconnect the thermostat without powering off the HVAC first or the fuse could blow.
I now have an Ecobee Smartthermostat installed and every now and then it has issues where it needs to be rebooted. Ecobee support says to simply pull it off the wall, wait 2 minutes and plug in back in. Ive been shutting the HVAC off (which powers off the thermostat). It accomplishes the same thing, but requires going to the HVAC which is a pain.
I would think as long as the pins dont short it should be fine. Would removing the Ecboee really cause the fuse to blow?
