Hi. I have an unfinished basement of around 1000 sq ft. Around 200 sq ft is a section of a connected crawl space that is vapor sealed and with a radon mitigation system installed. About 2 years ago I installed a standard GE 50 ppd dehumidifier (50 ppd based on new measurements standards). The actual size is 46.5 but they market it as 50 ppd. My basement has an average temperature of 65F and humidity of 55-70 during the spring-fall period. I live in midwest and our winters are very dry so no issues with the humidity in the basement during winter time.
I aim to keep the basement around 45-50 humidity at 65F. However the dehumidifier seems to do little to nothing. My humidity right now is 55 at best times (probably drier outside) and most of the time it sits between 60-70. I start to notice the musty smell around 55 humidity.
I did a test of my dehumidifier and for the parameters I posted above 55-70 humidity at 65F, the humidifier was only able to pull between 9 and 10 pints per day. These numbers were constant over a period of 4 days.
A while ago I was recommended I install a whole house dehumidifier, but not the one that connects to the ducts but rather one that sits in the basement.
For that size of basement, all that I read is that my 50 ppd should be plenty and that the conditions of my basement are right on the money for the new standard of measuring dehumidifiers sizes. But with 10 pints removed a day I'm at a loss. The dehumidifier seems to be working just fine.
Do I need a whole house / crawl space dehumidifier or the department store ones should be good for my size and maybe the one I have is broken? What other things I can do to figure this out?
