I have been seeing an amazing trend towards mini splits here they are about to legislate that no more new gas furnaces can be put into new construction. And people have heard great things about the mini splits saving others a fortune on fuel oil. Whatever the reason with most of the mini splits being multi systems that state you need to achieve a 500 micron or better vacuum, I figured it was time to get a new vacuum pump. Usually if you achieve a 50 micron vacuum and hold it for 20-30 minutes when you are done she will pop up over time to 600 microns. But if you can hold a 15 micron or less vacuum for 20 minutes that is pretty much it, fifteen minutes later you have a 37 micron evacuation.
So I got the Field Piece Run-Quick vacuum pump and it will pull and then hold a 13 micron vacuum in a fifty foot run of 3/8 and 1/4 inch tubing for 20 minutes which does an exceptional evacuation. But I first bring the system down with my JB Eliminator which will pull them down quickly to 75 microns and then I finish them with the Field piece and a fresh oil change. When the JB cools in-between it does a great job. With new oil it will pull a system down to 15 microns, it looks like I closed the door on the cord and dragged the JB from job to job but it does a great job. It is just that the black gold oil when changing oil starts to add up and you need a big container to catch all the oil. So the Field Piece is a pretty good answer for the mini split multis.
You have to open the gas ballast when you start pumping down or it will contaminate the oil. Once you get down to under 1000 microns you can close it and it does a good job.
I double checked my readings with my Testo 552 vacuum gauge that matches the Field Piece gauge rather exactly.

Sincerely,
William McCormick
