Seeking advice on replacing broken weater heater vent flue

Hi,

I discovered today that the flue vent pipe of my water heater has bursted at the seam (see attached picture). I understand toxic CO comes out of the vent. Fortunately, my water heater is not in a living space.

I bought the house 2 years ago and I believe the general home inspector must have missed this defect.

Here is my understanding:
The vent out of the water heater is 3".
There is an adapter that connects the 3" to the wider diameter pipes on top.
The water heater appears relatively new but the darker colored pipes appears very old.

My questions:
I don't notice any screws connecting the top pipe to the ceiling that leads to a chimney. Is that according to code?
What is the brown residue on the surface of the wider, dark-colored pipes?
When I measure the wider pipe's diameter, it seems to be 4.2" (although I may be off). Is that actually a 4" pipe?
I am thinking about replacing the broken pipe with galvanized pipe myself. Should I replace all darker colored pipes or only the broken pipe? What are all the pipe components (elbows , straight pipes etc) I should buy?

Thank you.

Jack
