Hi all - We're currently experiencing colder than normal temperatures here in the south (i.e., 17 degrees). This morning my Ecobee thermostat had a message alerting me that my auxiliary heat strips have been running for over 300 minutes. Investigating the issue I discovered the Ecobee allows the user to adjust the min outdoor temp setting before allowing aux heat to come on. Once the outdoor temperature drops below this setting your system will change over to aux heat. (sorry, I know this is nothing new for all you HVAC experts but I'm including it for other newbies who may be searching this site with a similar question)
Anyway... the Ecobee manual goes on the say most heat pumps are effective with an outdoor temperatures between 25-35 degrees F. Below this point the aux heat will kick in. But... it also states some heat pumps are better than others at extracting heat from the air, at which point they state: You should investigate your heat pump model and determine if the manufacturer lists the minimum operating specs in regards to adjusting this setting. FYI: At this time my Ecobee has the aux heat set to come on when the outdoor temp falls below 35 F.
NET: I have a 3 1/2 ton - York LX YHE42B21H and have searched the technical specs looking to identify its minimum outdoor effective temperature. I discovered York has some models that claim to be effective at extracting heat down to 0 degrees F... but have been unable to pinpoint the effective temp for my specific unit. Any ideas? Thanks!
