Transfer Grills to aid in inadequate return air in new construction home

Hi All--

This is my first time posting.

My home is approximately 3 years old, new construction, 3400 sf total, 2900 sf above grade with 600 sf finished in the basement. The HVAC system is a 3 zone system. Ever since moving in we have had issues with our HVAC system and the comfort in different floors/rooms.

One of them main issues I am realizing now is I believe we have inadequate return air supply in the home, and there are clearly pressure differences/cool spots in the house as evidenced by the humming/whistling from the duct work when the system is running and most noticeably in the upstairs where all the bedrooms are located. The first floor which 1200 sf has 3 return floor registers (6x12), one in the dining room, one in the home office which are both located in the front of the house and only 1 in the Family/kitchen/breakfast nook area. On the supply side there are 10 supply registers on the 1st floor.

Our second floor where we most consistently notice temperature differences between rooms have a singular return floor grill in each bedroom, of note the master suite (bathroom, bedroom, closet) has 4 supply registers and only 1 6"x10" floor return.

My thinking is to install a transfer grill in the master bedroom to the adjacent unconditioned upstairs hallway, and another in the family room adjacent to the stairwell leading to the basement.

I can provide more details/layout of our home but would be interested to hear anyone's experience with these transfer grills. Thanks in advance for your input!
