Return air vent behind gas dryer?

We moved into our current home (a townhouse built in 2013) just over a year ago. We have an upstairs laundry/HVAC room. This space is 100% intended for the washer and dryer on one side, and the HVAC on the other, with a door-width space between them, so it’s a tight fit. Recently, the washing machine had some issues so we replaced it. When the old washer was taken out, we wanted to clean the room as we could always see all kinds of junk behind both washer and dryer (socks, lint, toys, detergent pods, etc.) from the previous owners. We pulled the dryer forward as well and noticed that there is a return air vent back there just above the baseboards. It sits right next to where the dryer duct comes out of the dryer. There is also a large return air vent on the ceiling over the HWH. The one on the ceiling makes sense because all of the air vents are in the ceilings upstairs, so the one behind the dryer baffles me as there is no ducting in the wall behind it. I have always felt cold air coming from beneath the dryer, but I attributed that to the fact that the dryer vents through the roof. I have also noticed that in the past 14 months of living here, there is excessive dust on everything. We do have pets but we change the air filters pretty often and use good quality filters. Does that cold air or excessive dust have anything to do with this mystery return vent? Is there a legitimate reason for it to be there? If there is no ducting behind the wall as I suspect there isn’t, where is it venting, the attic? Nowhere? Do I just need to add this to the list of silly quirks that this builder decided to bestow upon the unsuspecting buyers?
