Lennox XP25 heat pump sounds

Hello all. This past fall, I had a Lennox XP25-036 heat pump installed, replacing the old AC unit attached to our Lennox SLP98UH070XV36B natural gas furnace. Lennox advertises this as a very quiet heat pump, but over the winter the XP25 outdoor unit made various loud sounds, sometimes for extended periods of time. My HVAC-Talk profile Home Page is a link to recordings I made of these sounds.

All of the sounds (except defrosting, obviously) happened when the unit was actively supplying heat to the house, but I could never figure out what would trigger the switch from the usual sound to one of the bad sounds. It did not seem to be correlated with how hard the unit was working or the outdoor temperature or anything like that: the sound would just sometimes change. The ringing bell sound ("Bad Sound 2") is especially loud and can last for hours. And although the "Usual" sound is mostly the expected air whooshing through the outdoor unit, there is also a high-pitched buzz or whine in it that is louder than I had expected.

Can anyone who has experience with these units say if such sounds are normal for an XP25? Or if they maybe signify the heat pump is defective or that there's an installation problem?

A little more background: during the initial installation, the installers remarked that the outdoor unit was vibrating more than they expected, but that they didn't know if this was normal for an XP25, since this was the first one they had installed (they were mostly familiar with Carrier units).

Some time after the initial install, the unit threw some (high pressure?) errors and tripped off. I looked through the documentation and realized that they had installed a wrong, non-Lennox indoor coil. But it took 2.5 months until I could get them to come back and install a new one: they then put in a Lennox C35-48B-2-1. When they changed the coil they re-charged the refrigerant, but it was -15 degrees C = +5 degrees F that day. Someone outside of that company has since told me refrigerant should only be charged or balanced when the ambient temperature is much warmer than that.

The XP25 is still under parts & labour warranty with this company: I need to get back in touch with them about whatever is going on with it. But I'm trying to educate myself as much as possible, so that I know what to ask them to do or look at.

Thank you!
