My hvac contractor installed a 2 stage heat pump/ variable speed air-handler last week. Because the ducting wasn't up we only ran it for a couple min before he left. I got the ducting finished today and started running the heat. It was going fine for about 30 min and got the house to the right temp.
Outta seemingly nowhere multiple smoke alarms were going off and it smelled like something was burning. I ran into the attic with a fire extinguisher thinking something was on fire, But nothing was burning or burnt (that i could see). I touched the copper lines and the big one was so hot it just about burned me, The AHU was off (no lights on in the bubble). When i got down the thermostat had no power either. I'm assuming a fuse blew somewhere (circuit breaker was fine) but i don't know where in the line it happened. Not sure if the heat pump is on, it has no viable lights and I don't want to open it up.
I cant tell you exactly how he wired it but there are two disconnects one at each unit. They are Goodman communicating units being controlled by a single stage thermostat. Not sure if this matters or not but the installer did not add extra refrigerant, he was supposed to come back after the ducts were done and add more but said it would be ok until then.
Obviously I'm going to call him in the morning but i gotta admit I'm scared. I spent all my savings on this and my house is getting an appraisal on Thursday.
Any idea on what could be going on? Is the copper line with insulation on it supposed to get so hot? Could this be caused by lack of refrigerant?
