Furnace replacement - there is no one right answer

I'm in a guess you would consider a converted two story as my daylight basement has become regular living space. I've received proposals form eight contractors to replace my furnace. I'm sure they look at middle class me with rigid metal ductwork that supports 800CFM/2 ton furnace and say well, you have ductwork to support a 2 to 3 ton furnace, here are my recommendations.

My focus over the past few years has been to upgrade windows, insulation, other to have heat loss for a two ton. Given this two ton, my real options appear to be a 80% that will be set to ignore second stage as most are 66,000 BTUs that overwhelm the the house with heat in a couple of minutes, to a 90+% that will need second stage on a rare occasion (I'm in mild climate). Given a Manuel J estimate of 30,000 BTUs,
it's either single stage, lock out a stage, or variable speed heat pump.

So my unprofessional advise, pick your one or two key things of importance (noise, efficiency, going electric with global warming concerned teenagers) and make the change. Use the professional advice from this site and sign a contract. It will likely greatly improve what you have. If it cost more to operate than you planned, buy fewer lattes.
