Kithcen Reno - Return Vent Location

Hello,

I am at the end of a kitchen renovation, and I am questioning the location of the return vent cutout. The original setup had 2 return vents close to each other along the outer walls of the bathroom and kitchen:Name: 1.JPG Views: 1 Size: 48.5 KB.
The kitchen walls were removed and here was the original return vent in the floor:

New flooring & an island were added, and the location of the return vent was moved. You can also see in this picture the supply vent under the sink:

The return in the floor was left in an empty space of the island and blocked & covered:

The original plan was to have an opening cut in that exact new location of the return, but the cabinet guy decided to put it on the side facing the sink:

When I asked the contractor if this was ok, I was told that it was fine. I don't feel like he was really focused on the question at the time, and would like a second opinion. Is it ok for the opening to be on that side? I do feel air flow if I put my hand in, but it is blocked by the island walls and there is no actual access to the return hole in the floor. I have also read posts regarding the return location in reference to the distance to the oven. Do I need to have this changed?

Thanks in advance!
