Carrier Unit Defrost Help

Hi,

We have been having a lot of fog and freezing temps over the last week and noticed that there was an unusual amount of ice and frost on my Carrier Heat Pump. Maybe a good inch on the outside vents. I called for service to get the unit checked out. The guy who came jumped the control board and put the unit in defrost mode. I ran for a few minutes and then it shut it off. He thought is was the defrost temp sensor. I used hot water to defrost the unit so I can use the pump instead of expensive propane. I noticed that the heat pump did indeed go into defrost mode - the fan shut off and it did it's thing. What I did notice is that the pipe going into the heat pump unit was not hot. I guess barley warm. The heat pump works perfectly in making heat, it goes into defrost mode but not sure the heat from the house is being put through the coils to defrost. Should the pipe be hot? Did the service guy rush my service call by not checking other things. The part is on back order and they haven't even gotten back to me with pricing. Thank god I Have propane as a backup heat but it cost about 14.00 a day to run it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
