The place I'm renting is less than 2 years old and has an Aprilaire 800 humidifier. The HVAC (geothermal, the humidifier, etc.) are in a utility space on the side of the house. Last winter we had no issues with the humidifier. Early this winter, we realized the humidifier was not increasing humidity and was really loud. I sleep in a room that shares a wall with the utility space and the sound of water being introduced into the unit, followed by a thunk when the flow stopped, was disturbing. And it was happening non-stop, so it was obvious something was wrong.
After a delay because of the holidays and COVID-19, the HVAC company our pocket community has hired to service the homes found that there was a bad switch. I think it was something that allowed the humidifier to coordinate with the system. Sorry, I don't have the full details on that.
But the tech got the humidifier operating "properly" again, meaning the system was able to humidify the air to the proper levels. When I commented on the noise during the original service visit, he said that it might be because the walls of the house aren't very substantial. And I have to admit that when you're standing in the utility room, the sound of the water flowing and stopping doesn't seem ridiculous. But in my bedroom, it seems way too loud--loud enough to disturb sleep, especially the "thunk" when the water sound stops--and I now have to sleep with earplugs.
The only suggestion I could find here was that the water pressure coming into the unit may be too high. I am doubtful, as in general our water pressure is on the annoyingly low side. Is there a built-in way the tech can change the water pressure, or does it require adding a modification? And any other ideas on what might be causing this noise?
