What would you pros do?

We just purchased a 20 year old home in the mountains of NC. Weather has pretty wide swings although show never stays long when we get it and summers can stay in the high 80’s. We have a 20 year old Amana Air Command 90 gas furnace. It heats our main floor fine, but the walkout finished basement built into the side of a mountain is 10 degrees lower all the time and very uncomfortable. We may eventually rent out the basement and are thinking a separate heat pump and thermostat would solve the problem. We are guessing we will need new ductwork. The area is about 1000 sq feet with 9’ ceilings.
—What unit would you choose for dependability, warranty, quietness and value?
—What should we know about ducting so we have balanced airflow? (One room was used as a unheated shop/work room and we are turning that into a den.)
—Will blocking furnace ducts to the basement harm the present Amana gas furnace?
Thanks for your valuable assistance. It’s hard to know who to trust here.
