Two stage (non-communicating) thermostat recommendations

I have an older Trane XV-80 two-stage furnace that until recently has been very satisfactorily controlled by a White Rodgers 1F81-261 thermostat. I think the thermostat may be going bad -- it has self-reset a couple of times, and the cycling behavior is somewhat erratic compared to the past. The furnace has recently been checked out and is fine.

The apparent replacement for this thermostat is now the Emerson 1F85-22PR. However, the only reference to staging in the manual for this newer thermostat is in the wiring. I'm concerned that there is no discussion of under what conditions stage 2 operation is called for, nor from what I can see of the screen shots in the manual does the thermostat even directly display when stage 2 is active. The old thermostat clearly indicates what stage is running - either "1" or "1+2" light up on the screen. Also, stage 2 operation on the old thermostat is strictly driven by demand and is not time based (unless you crank it up by 3 degrees or more, which selects stage 2 immediately). It also switches back to stage 1 when the ambient temperature gets close to the set point.

Any suggestions as to a good basic replacement thermostat? My only requirements are that it (1) show the operating stage and also (2) call for stage 2 only when the heating demand requires it, not based on time. (I especially don't want one that runs on low for a specific period of time and then switches to high for the duration of the cycle).
