I'm waiting for my furnace that is backordered as many things are these days and am researching new thermostats. The furnace is the Goodman GMEC960403AN two-stage natural gas upflow.
My contractor tells me that the furnace will control the two-stage operation by itself by looking at the last three cycles to determine the need for first or second stage heat, and that a two-stage thermostat will also do that but differently.
Is it better to let the thermostat control the staging? I would think that some temperature input would be best rather than letting the furnace just use timing and previous cycle status but maybe I'm wrong.
I have not asked my contractor to add a new thermostat, he says the single-stage one I have now will work if I don't want the added expense of another, but I would rather spend a little more to get better or more precise control of the cycles.
Thanks for the help!
