Replacing Heat Pump with a split system

Hi there. Have an old Trane XR13 that is horizontally mounted above my garage that needs to be replaced. It is 3.5 tons and cools the master bedroom and bathroom, office, and a guest bath.

I live in Florida and from what I am told a horizontally mounted unit is no Bueno and vertically mounted is preferred. What has happened is the coils have rusted out and I've got a very small leak but the coils are all rusty. The other two Trane XR13 (5 ton and 3 ton) are vertically mounted in conditioned space on the second story, and look brand new.

So first question is having the unit in an unconditined air and horizontally mounted shorten the life and cause rusting? Second question is I've got a big walk in closet should the replacement go there vertically mounted? Third question is someone suggested going with a split unit that can have the piping ran to the old duct outlets? They said much cheaper than a new heat pump. Fourth question is I have a home warranty with American Home Shield and this would be my first claim with them. Any experience?

Thanks!
