Hi there..
We have 2 Lennox units ( 2 and 2.5 ton units) (12 years old). We moved to this house 4 years back and ever since both units had Freon links. In the 1st 2 years, the ac techs were bringing the Freon to the needed level. So we did this thrice so far on the 2.5 ton unit and twice on the 2 ton. Finally last year we found a reliable HVAC tech who mentioned that we need to replace the 2.5 ton AC unit for sure and the evaporator coils are bad. ( I saw that it was rusted and corroded). The 2 ton unit has appeared to not have freon leaks this season. We have been regularly had our AC and Furnaces serviced.
Question
1. The recommendation by my tech was to change both AC and Furnace, as installing Furnaces now will save on cost etc.
Can I use a new RUUD(RA14 series 14 SEER 2.5 ton) and make it work with an existing Lennox Furnace?
2. Another installer mentioned not to change the 2 ton unit as we didn't have to refill freon and it may have 3-4 years of life left.
Is it better to do this or be proactive and change both units at the same time?
My HVAC tech said "this unit is getting there". He has not pushed to change this unit but I get a discount when I replace both HVAC units in one shot.
3. Any harm in replacing just the outdoor AC units with the Evaporator coils and think about changing the furnaces later?
From what I read on this forum, Furnaces can come even upto 20 years. Some of the threads here speak about 30+ years, however I don't trust Lennox.
4. Thoughts on the RUUD RA14 series (2 and 2.5 ton units). How reliable are they?
Thank you for all the info here and appreciate your responses.
