Hello,
So, here is the situation. Heat pump with electric backup in upstairs of the house developed a leak. 12 year old unit, but I get it. Tell my HVAC contractor - I DO NOT want another heat pump. I hate heat pumps. I hate the luke warm air that comes out of the registers. I hate running my compressor year round - these units always fail in half the time as a standard AC unit with a furnace - happened 3 times to me in three different dwellings. Heat pumps upstairs are toast, downstairs with furnaces - running strong! Anyway, I'm digressing.
The house came pre-plumbed with gas to the attic, so great, let's just put in a furnace. HVAC contractor asks if I want 80% or 90% efficiency furnace. I tell him 80%, and he installs the new system. So I think, great, new AC unit for the summer, gas heat for the winter, new efficient system, all is well.
Then winter rolls around. I hear the heat come on in the house. Air is luke warm. Huh? This doesn't feel like forced warm air!!! Call HVAC contractor, tell him the issue, he says it's the heat pump from the dual fuel system he installed???:eek2::eek2::eek2: I asked him then if I needed a dual fuel thermostat to take advantage of the system. He didn't seem to have an opinion! I asked him if he installed an outdoor temperature sensor if I buy a dual fuel thermostat. He said no, buy a thermostat with WiFi. He has since been fired.......
So, can somebody PLEASE help me understand my options - if I JUST want to run the furnace in the winter!
Currently, I am running my thermostat in Emergency Heat Mode. This just uses the furnace and not the heat pump. The problem is that when the thermostat calls for heat, the blower comes on at the same time as the furnace. So I get about 30 to 45 seconds of cold air from the registers while the furnace is getting warm.
Questions:
1. Can I tell my programmable thermostat that I have a furnace instead of a heat pump? Honeywell RTH6360D1002/E Programmable Thermostat, 5-2 Schedule
2. Should I buy a dual fuel thermostat and set the outdoor temperatures such that it just uses the furnace all the time? Is this possible? Of course I'll have to buy a WiFi thermostat or install the outdoor temp. sensor myself.
3. Should I buy a dual fuel thermostat and use the dual fuel system as it was designed and learn to live with the heat pump again even though I absolutely can't stand it? Again with the need to buy a dual fuel thermostat.
Any consideration given this post is sincerely appreciated, sorry for the length,
Thanks so much,
Robert
