5 year old Trane - coolant leak / local HVAC says we need to replace entire unit?!?!?

Hello. We purchased a Trane (residential) unit no more than 5 years ago and a recent surge in the heat had us turn the A/C on only to find warm air coming out of the vents. Today a tech from a local company came out and said that due to the coolant used we'd have to replace the system to the tune of around $3K. Seeing as how the unit is only 5 years old and we spent around $5K for it, my heart sank. This is not a good time for my family (three little ones) as we just don't have that kind of money to spend. I'm hoping that the leak can be fixed and coolant replaced. Please advise.
