I'm hoping for a little help from HVAC hive mind because I am genuinely confused!
I scheduled a maintenance call for for my 16 year old Goodman furnace. During the inspection they found my heat exchanger was cracked and were required to turn off the gas to my furnace. So i'm here in Southern Ontario, St. Catharines to be exact, in 44 degree Fahrenheit weather with no heat. I have gotten multiple quotes from contractors that install Trane, Lennox, Carrier, KeepRite, and Goodman Furnances. They all vary in price, which is to be expected, and I understand that the quality of installation is just as important as the equipment (if not more important).
Every contractor that has come to my house and provided a quote did nothing more than ask for the square footage (1,200 sq ft) of my home. All but one of the quotes is for a 60,000 BTU furnance. The company that wants to sell me a Trane Furnace (S9V2 2 stage) is a recommending a 40,000 BTU furnace. When I told them that other contractors recommended 60,000 BTUs he said that those would be oversized and would lead to a cracked heat exchanger and shorted the life of the furnace.
My question is what size furnace should I be getting? Is 60,000 BTUs to large? Will installing an oversized furnace affect performance, increase wear, and shorten the life of the furnace?
Any help or advice someone could provide would be greatly appreciated. I've tried to do my research, and I am leaning towards either a Payne or the more expensive Carrier, but I just don't know what to do.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Dutch
