A house that I rent out has a CO leak and some cracks in the pipes connected to the furnace. So I'm going to have a new furnace installed and those pipes replaced. The (generally well-informed) tenant -who is not in the place now - says that since the house is over 100 years old, it would also be a good time to have all the ducts redone - that unless a contractor snakes a camera in, we can't be sure there aren't cracks in the ducts.
Is that really a concern? Would some cracks just mean some heat is getting into the walls or basement, which is just an inefficiency, or is it a danger?
Another factor leading us to consider redoing everything is that some returns are close to the supplies. Can't we just plug up the return, and add a new one elsewhere? Or install directional vents?
I am having a professional do the work. I just want to understand the situation better.
