Besides that the 18 is an up to 18 SEER and the 20 is an up to 22 SEER.
This is in Dallas, new construction, 4,000 sqft 2 story. Builder is closing in on final plans and I'm going to have a quick chat with their HVAC folks to see what they're putting in. I know they like American Standard (mostly because of the warranty), and I'm assuming they're going high spec. I put a lot of value in having a variable-speed system because of humidity control. From the AS website, I haven't been able to find any quantifiable differences between the Platinum 18 and 20 units other that pure efficiency. Going back of the envelope, and assuming electric rates stay near where they are for a number of years (yes that could certainly change), my savings from an 18 to a 22 SEER is ~$350/year. We like to keep it at 72 degrees, and for the sake of argument, let's say there's a 4 ton for each floor. I'm not quite sure what the price difference is between the 18 and 20, but if it's $5k/unit, then my payback is quite a long time and I'd just rather go with the 18. Unless, of course, there's some other difference between the units I'm missing.
Thanks all!
