5 Ton AC return ducts size

Hello

I just had a brand new 5 TON packaged unit installed on our roof by a company and we had them redo our ducting to make it compliant with the new unit. We are located in New Mexico. Our previous 5 ton unit only had a 16x16 (leading to a 12 inch round) and a 12x12 (leading to a 8 inch round). We had many issues with our previous unit which i believed to be linked to our low return air duct sizes. In the 15 years we owned that unit we had to replace the condensor 3 times (about every 5 years) and then had to replace the blower 2 times, the capacitors 4 or 5 times, and the mainboard once. That was originally installed by Sears home services. I told the new company that the previous manual said that was very low and i would like them to install enough return air ducts to make our unit operate properly.

They installed our new 5 ton packaged unit and then upped our 16x16(8 in round) to a 20x20 (20in round) and that was all. They said at that level it was proper and they told me it was doing about 530cfm through the filters. We would like to install like a merv 11 or merv 12 reusable filter in the ducts but I still feel like we are low on return air ducts. I have read forums here stating that we should have about 1000 sq inches of return filter area, but the company says we are fine with 544 sq inches of return filter area.

Would anyone be able to give us direct advise on this as we are having a hard time finding any more information besides what i stated above. Will the merv 11 or merv 12 filter cause issues with our high cfm and cause us to lose air flow? Are we still under on the total return duct size?
