Help! We are first time home owners and need to upgrade our 1980s furnaces and old swamp coolers to a new HVAC system/refridgerated air. I got 9 (!) quotes from HVAC companies, and they are all over the place, ranging from $*****. Even the size of the units they are quoting varies (2.5-3.5 for one of our two units needed).
The two companies we think we trust the most: One is the cheapest quote and is proposing Rheem R801CA100521ZSA Down Flow 100,000 BTU Furnace; Rheem RA1648AJINA 16 Seer 4 Ton Condenser; Rheem RCF4821STAMCA 16 Seer 4 Ton Coil, for the downstairs (3 ton for upstairs) for $*** (getting 16 SEER). Another company (who we have used for inspections and servicing) is middle of the pricing, and is proposing Heil 14 SEER/furnace 80% efficient at $****.
Is Rheem or Heil "better"? Why is there such price variation? The "big" HVAC company names (like B Carlson, TLC) in Albuquerque are quoting more like $****+ for their systems. These are all for single stage systems. I didn't think it was worth doing a 2 stage or variable system (not sure how long we'll live here, worried about reliability so thinking single stage is best for us).
We're overwhelmed with the decision, so much that we're thinking about putting off the purchase for another year. Any tips on what to focus on when deciding on the company to go with? Is there a certain brand we should be looking for?
Thanks for any help you can provide!
